Ukraine rebels seek 'special status', crisis talks to resume on Friday Posted: 01 Sep 2014 12:05 PM PDT Pro-Russia separatists sat down for preliminary Ukraine peace talks on Monday due to resume later this week in the Belarusian capital Minsk, saying they would be prepared to stay part of Ukraine if they were granted "special status". The meeting of the so-called "contact group", at which the rebels also said one of their key conditions would be for Kiev to immediately end its military offensive, ended without any details being announced but a promise to continue consultations. The separatists issued their call as the Ukrainian military faced a run of reverses on the battlefield which Kiev has ascribed to support for the rebels from at least 1,600 Russian combat troops. Moscow denies its troops are in Ukraine.
Saudi court jails 17 for seeking to fight in Iraq: SPA Posted: 01 Sep 2014 11:58 AM PDT A Saudi Arabian court jailed 17 men for up to 26 years on Monday for seeking to fight in Iraq and funding militants, official media reported, part of a security crackdown in which scores have been imprisoned in recent weeks. Worried about potential threats from citizens who have traveled to join Islamist insurgents in Syria and Iraq, Saudi Arabia has banned them from fighting abroad, donating money to any faction or sympathizing with militant ideologies. The official Saudi Press Agency reported that the 17 were sentenced to terms of imprisonment ranging from 2-1/2 years to 26 years. The men were charged with following extremist ideology, disobeying the country's leadership by planning to fight in Iraq, coordinating the travel of some "misled" members of society and trying to turn public opinion against the state.
Ban on buying Russian bonds eyed as EU envoys meet: sources Posted: 01 Sep 2014 11:56 AM PDT By Jan Strupczewski and Martin Santa BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Europeans could be barred from buying new Russian government bonds under a package of extra sanctions over Moscow's military role in Ukraine that European Union ambassadors were to start discussing on Monday, three EU sources said. EU leaders decided at a summit on Saturday that the direct engagement of Russian troops in the war in eastern and southern Ukraine - still denied by Moscow - called for a stepping up of sanctions imposed so far unless Russia pulled its soldiers back. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who led the drive for a tougher EU response, said on Monday that Moscow's behavior in Ukraine must not go unanswered, even if sanctions hurt the German economy, heavily dependent on imported Russian gas.

Britain unveils powers to strip suspected Islamist fighters of passports Posted: 01 Sep 2014 11:36 AM PDT By William James and Kylie MacLellan LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday announced plans to strip suspected Islamist militants of their passports temporarily, to combat the threat posed by radicalized Britons returning from Syria and Iraq. The proposals come days after Cameron raised Britain's terrorism alert to its second-highest level, saying Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq posed the country's greatest-ever security risk. "We have all been shocked and sickened by the barbarism we have witnessed in Iraq this summer," Cameron told parliament. Currently only Britain's interior minister has the power to withdraw a passport.
Ireland demands review of U.N. Golan Heights mandate Posted: 01 Sep 2014 11:35 AM PDT Ireland may not replace its 130-person rapid response force in the Golan Heights, where 44 peacekeepers from Fiji are being held by militants, until the United Nations reviews its mandate for its forces there, the defense minister said on Monday. Islamist fighters involved in Syria's three-year-old civil last week overran a crossing point in the line that has separated Israelis from Syrians in the Golan Heights since the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Ireland's contingent, which is the most heavily armed element of the 1,200 strong multinational U.N. mission, was due to be replaced by new Irish troops next month, but Ireland is to freeze the rotation, Defense Minister Simon Coveney said. "I have made it very clear, that if the UN wants Ireland to continue to support this mission... then we need a full review and we have to get assurances about how the mission will change to adapt to the new realities," Coveney told state broadcaster RTE.

Securing release of three U.S. detainees in North Korea is a top priority: White House Posted: 01 Sep 2014 11:19 AM PDT The White House said on Monday it was continuing to do all that it can to secure the release of three Americans detained in North Korea, after they made a televised appeal for help from the U.S. The three spoke to the cable channel CNN on Monday, with one of the prisoners saying his health was failing and another describing his situation as "urgent." "We have seen the reports of interviews with the three American citizens detained in North Korea," Patrick Ventrell, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said in a statement.
U.S. asks North Korea to release U.S. citizens 'out of humanitarian concern' Posted: 01 Sep 2014 11:19 AM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Monday requested that the North Korean government release three U.S. citizens currently detained there "out of humanitarian concern" and grant one of them special amnesty to seek medical care. Three U.S. citizens - Kenneth Bae, Jeffrey Fowle and Matthew Miller - asked the American government for help returning home on Monday in rare interviews with CNN set up by the North Korean government. Bae is serving a 15-year sentence, others are awaiting trial. "There is no greater priority for us than the welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad ... ...

Hong Kong activists in fightback after China vote decision Posted: 01 Sep 2014 10:40 AM PDT Hong Kong pro-democracy activists heckled a top Chinese official Monday, setting the stage for disruptive protests against the mainland's landmark decision to limit voting reforms, but Beijing insisted that there would be no turning back. Li Fei, a member of the top committee of China's rubber-stamp parliament, was forced to speak over the cries of pro-democracy lawmakers and protesters during a meeting with local officials in the semi-autonomous Chinese city. Brief scuffles erupted outside the venue as police used pepper spray to stop protesters from storming the hall, where Li told delegates that China will not tolerate a local leader who is disloyal to the mainland. "Anyone who does not love the country, love Hong Kong or is confrontational towards the central government shall not be the chief executive," he said.
