Israel had agreed to extend an initial 12-hour pause in the fighting by a further four hours but this was rejected by Islamist group Hamas, which dominates Gaza. Israeli tank fire killed a man in the southern Gaza Strip, a local official said, announcing the first fatality after the breakdown of the ceasefire. The man killed by tank fire brought the number of Palestinian fatalities to 1,033 since July 8 when Israel launched its offensive, aimed at ending rocket fire out of Gaza.

The detention of 115 police officers in overnight raids earlier this week ratcheted up a power struggle between Erdogan and his erstwhile ally, Fethullah Gulen, an influential Islamic scholar based in Pennsylvania, whose followers took up key posts in the police and judiciary during Erdogan's 11 years in power. Fuat Ali Yilmazer, who oversaw intelligence for Istanbul police and is accused of forming and leading a criminal gang, was among those formally arrested, CNN Turk reported. Warning sirens sounded across the country as rockets were fired as far as the Tel Aviv area, police said. Israel had offered to extend the truce, which began at 8 a.m. (0100 EST), by four hours, but Hamas said it had not agreed to this. Gaza's health ministry said a man was killed in the southern Gaza Strip as a result of tank fire, believed to be the first fatality after the breakdown of the ceasefire.

Chairman and CEO Blankfein moderates a panel discussion at North American Energy Summit in New YorkBy Lauren Tara LaCapra NEW YORK (Reuters) - A deal to resolve a U.S. regulator's claims against Goldman Sachs Group Inc over mortgage-backed securities sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac leading up to the financial crisis could cost the bank between $800 million and $1.25 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter. The person said Goldman Sachs is discussing a settlement with the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which filed 18 lawsuits against Goldman and other banks in 2011 over about $200 billion in mortgage-backed securities that later went sour. Goldman Sachs and the FHFA declined to comment on Saturday.
