U.S. President Barack Obama has offered up to 300 American advisers to Iraq but held off granting Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's Shi'ite Muslim-led government's request for air strikes to counter the two-week advance by Sunni militants. Officials have meanwhile called for Iraqis to form an inclusive government.

Argentine economy slips into recession

Posted: 23 Jun 2014 12:42 PM PDT

Argentina slid into recession in the first quarter, with gross domestic product in Latin America's No. 3 economy contracting 0.8 percent after shrinking a downwardly revised 0.5 percent in the last three months of 2013, official data showed on Monday. The news came on the back of a setback for Argentina last week in its fight over debt, and as the economy grapples with one of the world's highest inflation rates, difficult access to capital, complex export and import restrictions, and falling central bank reserves. Year-on-year, the economy contracted 0.2 percent in the first quarter, the Indec National Statistics Agency added. Many economists expect Argentina to post a full-year contraction in 2014, the first since its catastrophic 2001-02 debt crisis, when it defaulted on $100 billion of debt.

Argentina seeks U.S. court stay to avoid new debt crisis

The Economy Ministry building is seen in Buenos AiresBy Hugh Bronstein BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentina has asked a U.S. judge to issue a stay of his ruling against the country in its case against "holdout" creditors as it seeks to start negotiations aimed at avoiding a new default, according to court papers filed on Monday. Argentina is in a 12-year-old legal fight with investors who declined to participate in debt restructurings after the country failed to pay about $100 billion of debt in 2002. Without a stay on a ruling against the country by U.S. District Judge Thomas Griesa, Argentina would be legally barred from making a June 30 coupon payment on its restructured bonds unless it also pays $1.33 billion to holdouts seeking full payment of the debt they hold. "We consider it essential that Judge Griesa issue a stay so that the republic of Argentina can continue paying the holders of restructured bonds," Economy Minister Axel Kicillof told reporters in Buenos Aires.
