Powers, Iran eye February start to talks on nuclear settlement

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 12:58 PM PST

By Justyna Pawlak BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Big powers and Iran are likely to start talks on a final settlement to the long dispute over its nuclear ambitions in February, shortly after a six-month deal curbing its atomic activity takes effect, a diplomatic source said on Monday. If successful, the next round of negotiations could head off the risk of lingering mistrust spiraling out of control into a wider Middle East war over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program. Led by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, the talks will face the challenge of defining a permissible scope of Iranian nuclear activity that would lay to rest Western concerns that it could yield an atomic weapon. In return, Iran - which denies having any intention to "weaponise" the enrichment of uranium for nuclear energy - wants governments in the United States and Europe to end painful economic sanctions.

Southwest airplane lands at wrong airport

A Southwest Airlines jet taxiing out to the runway at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on February 14, 2006US airline Southwest was investigating Monday after a flight bound for Missouri's Branson airport landed safely -- at a different airport several miles away. The scheduled flight was carrying 124 customers and a crew of five from Chicago Midway to Branson, Southwest said. Instead it landed at the Taney County airport, also in Branson. The runway at Taney County is only about half the length of the one at the intended airport -- 3738 feet (1,139 meters) compared 7,140 -- which could have posed a problem for the Boeing 737.

House Democrats request probe into Target card breach

The sign outside the Target store in ArvadaBy Mark Hosenball and Alina Selyukh WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic members of the Financial Services Committee of the House of Representatives have called on the panel to investigate the hacking of credit and debit card data belonging to millions of customers of retailer Target Corp. The request piggybacks on a similar move by Senate Democrats on Friday as lawmakers respond to the massive breach at Target, the No. 3 U.S. retailer, during the holiday shopping season, which resulted in the theft of about 40 million credit and debit card records and 70 million other records containing customer information. In a letter to Jeb Hensarling, the committee's Republican chairman, 17 committee Democrats, led by ranking member Maxine Waters, asked for a "full Financial Services Committee hearing." It was unclear whether the committee's Republican majority would respond to the request. After the request from Senate Democrats last week, Senate Banking Committee leaders have confirmed they plan to hold a hearing on data security issues in late January.

Men brandish machets and knives to threaten muslim people in the eight's district of Bangui on January 12, 2014Bangui (Central African Republic) (AFP) - New sectarian violence has erupted in the Central African Republic, the Red Cross warned Monday, saying at least 127 people had been killed in the past three days despite the new interim president telling marauding fighters "the party is over". Even as interim leader Alexandre-Ferdinand Nguendet vowed to end the "anarchy" that has gripped the country since his predecessor seized power in March, the local Red Cross said Christian-Muslim fighting continued killing scores of civilians. The head of the Central African Red Cross, Antoine Mbaobogo, said clashes had broken out in various towns after residents took to the streets to celebrate the resignation Friday of coup-leader Michel Djotodia, who had installed himself as the majority-Christian country's first Muslim president.

Ackman gets something to cheer about with Suntory-Beam deal

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 12:19 PM PST

By Svea Herbst-Bayliss BOSTON (Reuters) - Like a fine bourbon, a good bet sometimes needs to age. Hedge fund billionaire William Ackman saw his 3-1/2 year old investment in Fortune Brands pay off big on Monday when Japanese whiskey producer Suntory said it would pay $13.6 billion cash for Beam, the liquor unit spun out of Fortune in 2011. The deal, if it goes through, will give Ackman and his investors something to drink to in early 2014, after his 2013 was overshadowed by a $500 million loss on J.C. Penney and mounting losses on his short against Herbalife. But it also shows Ackman's long-term investment savvy by proving right his years-old theory about Fortune Brands: the conglomerate owner of Titleist golf balls, Jim Beam and Moen faucets was far more valuable to investors broken up than unified.

Bill Murray SuntoryBy Martinne Geller and Olivia Oran LONDON (Reuters) - Suntory Holdings Ltd on Monday said it would buy U.S. spirits company Beam Inc for $13.6 billion cash in a deal that would make the Japanese company the world's third-largest spirits maker. Including the assumption of Beam's net debt, the deal is valued at $16 billion. It brings together Beam's Jim Beam and Maker's Mark bourbons, Courvoisier cognac and Sauza tequila with Suntory's Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki and Kakubin Japanese whiskies, Bowmore Scotch whisky and Midori liqueur. "All Japanese beverage companies have been focused on getting growth outside Japan," said Bernstein Research analyst Trevor Stirling.

Beam bonds soar on M&A news

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 12:14 PM PST

By Danielle Robinson NEW YORK, Jan 13 (IFR) - Beam's bonds ratcheted in by as much as 15 basis points on Monday after Japan's Suntory Holdings made a USD16bn bid for the US spirits maker. The tightening is based on hopes that a successful bid from Suntory will trigger a change of control (CoC) covenant aimed at protecting investors against credit event risk. "We know very little on Suntory to be able to draw this conclusion (that CoC language would be triggered) with certainty, but this is what's currently driving the bonds," said a sell-side credit strategist. Beam is currently rated Baa2, BBB- and BBB by Moody's, S&P and Fitch respectively, but the strategist warned that the acquisition would raise leverage sharply - and Moody's quickly weighed in with a warning that it could downgrade Suntory.

Steve McQueen celebrates during the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly HillsBy Mary Milliken BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) - The film "12 Years a Slave" took the coveted Golden Globe for best drama and "American Hustle" won best musical or comedy on Sunday in a kick-off to the Hollywood awards season that foreshadows a wide scattering of honors for a year crowded with high-quality movies. Only two films garnered more than one award at the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards, an important but not entirely accurate barometer for the industry's highest honors, the Academy Awards to be held on March 2. "American Hustle," a romp through corruption in the 1970s directed by David O. Russell, was the top winner with three Globes for its seven nominations, while modest AIDS film "Dallas Buyers Club" starring Matthew McConaughey, took home two acting awards for him and co-star Jared Leto. British director Steve McQueen's brutal depiction of pre-Civil war American slavery in "12 Years a Slave," based on a true story of free black man Solomon Northup who was sold into slavery, only won one award out of its seven nominations.

New Jersey Governor Christie reacts during news conference in TrentonBy Barbara Goldberg and Margaret Chadbourn NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. investigators are looking into whether embattled New Jersey Governor Chris Christie misused about $2 million in Superstorm Sandy relief funds for an ad campaign that put him in the spotlight in an election year, officials said on Monday. Already enmeshed in a scandal over snarled traffic at the George Washington Bridge, Christie, a likely 2016 Republican presidential contender, is now being audited by the Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, an agency spokesman said. The probe began after HUD received a request from Congressman Frank Pallone Jr., a New Jersey Democrat, the spokesman said. The inspector is focusing on a federally financed $25 million marketing campaign intended to draw visitors back to the Jersey Shore as the area struggled to rebuild from the damage unleashed by Sandy in late 2012.
