Compromise floated on enrichment issue in Iran nuclear talks -envoys

Posted: 22 Nov 2013 12:40 PM PST

By Louis Charbonneau GENEVA (Reuters) - A major sticking point in nuclear negotiations between Iran and six world powers may have been overcome with compromise language in a draft deal regarding Iran's demand for a "right to enrich" uranium, Western diplomats said on Friday. Iran has insisted that any pact to curb its sensitive nuclear activity explicitly recognize its right to refine uranium, a process that can produce fuel for civilian power plants or atomic bombs. Western powers say there is no such thing as a right to enrich under international law. This issue has emerged as one of the most difficult areas of disagreement between Iran and Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, diplomats close to the Geneva negotiations said.

Kerry would leave for Geneva later on Friday "with the goal of continuing to help narrow the differences and move closer to an agreement," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. The decision was taken after consulting with European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is coordinating talks with Iran on behalf of the six powers, Psaki added in a statement.

The 28-year-old German, who had led a Mercedes one-two ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the morning, was fastest again, outpacing both Red Bulls in the final minutes of another rain-hit session in the afternoon. For Rosberg it was confirmation of his merit among the top drivers, many of whom were left frustrated by the lack of available suitable Pirelli tyres in the conditions. You would expect the Red Bull to be quicker anyway but I don't know how much fuel they were running.

Prime Minister David Cameron has questioned why Paul Flowers, a one-time local Labour politician and Methodist preacher with no banking qualifications, was judged suitable for the chairmanship during a period when the bank nearly collapsed. Chancellor George Osborne ordered an inquiry into the bank, just as its parent Co-operative Group seeks approval from bondholders and preference shareholders for a rescue plan that gives a group of hedge funds control of a bank which once promoted its ethical credentials. The publication of a video by the Mail on Sunday which the newspaper said showed Flowers arranging to buy crack cocaine and crystal meth propelled the Co-op into a political storm over the executive's links to leaders of the opposition Labour party.
