Over 11,000 children killed in Syria: study Posted: 24 Nov 2013 12:26 PM PST More than 11,000 children have been killed in Syria since the conflict there began over two and a half years ago, many of them summarily executed or targeted by snipers, a UK-based think tank said in a report published on Sunday. The Oxford Research Group study, which called on all sides in the conflict to stop targeting children, said seven out of 10 of the children killed in the war had lost their lives in shell fire, by aerial bombardment or by improvised explosive devices. One in four children had been killed by small arms fire, with almost 800 executed and almost 400 targeted by snipers. The United Nations puts the overall death toll in Syria at more than 100,000 dead.

World powers, Iran clinch 'historic' nuclear deal Posted: 24 Nov 2013 11:52 AM PST World leaders hailed Sunday a "historic" nuclear deal with Iran as a triumph for diplomacy, but cautioned the hard work was just starting to keep Tehran from building a bomb. Iran agreed to curb its nuclear programme for the next six months in exchange for limited sanctions relief, in a preliminary accord meant to lay the foundations for a comprehensive agreement later this year. The deal was reached in marathon talks in Geneva that ended Sunday before dawn after long tractions between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. Tehran's arch-foe Israel slammed the deal as a "historic mistake" that left open the capability for the Islamic republic to develop a nuclear arsenal.
Mali holds legislative vote amid security fears Posted: 24 Nov 2013 11:48 AM PST GAO, Mali (AP) — Malians voted Sunday in legislative elections amid heavy security, highlighting fears that a vote seen as the last step in restoring constitutional rule in the battle-scarred country could be sabotaged by rebel attacks.

Mali parliamentary polls marked by apathy, minor unrest Posted: 24 Nov 2013 11:41 AM PST Malians voted on Sunday in parliamentary elections intended to seal the troubled west African nation's return to democracy but which were marred by low-level civil unrest and apparently poor voter turnout. The polls marked Mali's first steps to recovery after it was plunged into chaos by a military coup in March last year, and finalised a process begun with the election of its first post-conflict leader in August. But voters were prevented from taking part in Talataye, a northeastern town of around 14,000 people, where Tuareg separatists destroyed ballot boxes, according to a military source, and chanted: "No vote, we want independence". Some 6.5 million Malians were eligible to cast ballots for a new national assembly, with more than 1,000 candidates running for the 147 seats -- but turnout initially looked weak across the country and there were reports of thefts of ballot boxes in the north.

Tens of thousands filled the Square of Europe in central Kiev to demonstrate against the decision of President Viktor Yanukovych's government to scrap a plan to sign an Association Agreement that would have deepened ties with the European Union. But riot police forced them back with batons and tear gas, an AFP correspondent said. The centre of Kiev was covered in a sea of protesters waving EU and Ukrainian flags who marched on the Square of Europe from the statue of Ukraine's national poet Taras Shevchenko. |

Six powers clinch breakthrough deal curbing Iran's nuclear activity Posted: 24 Nov 2013 11:08 AM PST By Parisa Hafezi and Justyna Pawlak GENEVA (Reuters) - Iran and six world powers clinched a deal on Sunday curbing the Iranian nuclear programme in exchange for initial sanctions relief, signalling the start of a game-changing rapprochement that would reduce the risk of a wider Middle East war. Aimed at easing a long festering standoff, the interim pact between Iran and the United States, France, Germany, Britain, China and Russia won the critical endorsement of Iranian clerical Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. U.S. President Barack Obama said the deal struck after marathon, tortuous and politically charged negotiations cut off Tehran's possible routes to a nuclear bomb. But Israel, Iran's arch-enemy a U.S. ally, denounced the agreement as an "historic mistake".

Iran will start implementing nuclear agreement in weeks: Zarif Posted: 24 Nov 2013 10:46 AM PST Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Sunday his country would begin implementing a nuclear agreement struck with world powers in the next few weeks, as hundreds of supporters welcomed him and his negotiating team home. Crowds gathered at Mehrabad airport on Sunday evening local time, hailing Zarif as a hero and holding flags and flowers. Some held aloft posters of President Hassan Rouhani, the architect of Iran's initiative in striking a nuclear deal. "At the same time, we are prepared to begin negotiations for a final resolution as of tomorrow." Earlier on Sunday, the team was acclaimed by Iran's most powerful man, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who put the success of the agreement down to the resistance of the nation.
